Global, phase III, double-blind clinical trial in patients with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS)
Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) also known as reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD) is a form of chronic pain that usually affects an arm or a leg. CRPS typically develops after an injury, surgery, a stroke, or a heart attack. However, the cause of CRPS is not completely understood.
People with CRPS have changing combinations of spontaneous pain or excess pain that is much greater than normal following something as mild as a touch.
Signs and symptoms of CRPS
- Persistent burning or throbbing pain, usually in your arm, leg, hand, or foot
- Sensitive to touch or cold
- Changes in skin temperature
- Swelling of the painful area
- Changes in skin color, texture
- Changes in hair and nail growth
- Joint stiffness, swelling, and damage
- Muscle spasms, tremors, weakness, and loss (atrophy)
- Decreased ability to move the affected body part
Causes of CRPS
The cause of CRPS is not completely understood. It’s thought to be caused by an injury to or an abnormality of the peripheral and central nervous systems. CRPS typically occurs as a result of a trauma or an injury. Most CRPS illnesses are thought to be caused due to improper function of the peripheral C-fiber nerve fibers that carry pain messages to the brain. This excess firing also triggers inflammation designed to promote healing and rest after an injury. In some people the nerve injury is obvious but in others, a specialist may be needed to locate and treat the injury.
CRPS – Clinical Trial Feasibility on CREDEVO
This was a double-blind phase III clinical trial in patients with Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS).
Investigators have been identified in Australia, South Korea, Malaysia, Taiwan, and Singapore for a global clinical trial in the pain management segment. The feasibility process for this clinical trial has been performed on Credevo.
Diagnosis of CRPS was considered according to the clinical diagnostic criteria recommended by the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP; “Budapest clinical criteria”).
Signs and symptoms of CRPS were applied to an affected limb (arm or leg) and must demonstrate asymmetry with respect to the contralateral limb.
Credevo is a clinical research management platform that provides support for all your clinical trial needs. Credevo offers feasibility services (both country-level and site-level feasibilities), clinical trial monitoring, clinical trials regulatory services, and much more.
Complex regional pain syndrome is a chronic pain condition, generally found in patients with trauma or injury to one of the limbs. While trials in the CRPS segment have been conducted in the United States earlier and some are still ongoing. Asia Pacific region is still to witness a big clinical trial in this segment.
The clinical trial conducted has been brought by a major global research-focused organization for the development of a novel therapeutic product. This is aimed at improving patient care in this niche segment. Investigators are being invited to review the clinical trial details and submit the feasibility response.
