That shows the great demand for generic medicines in Malaysia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This demand is due to the steep rise in non-communicable diseases, and some other reasons include,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>With the increase in the prevalence of unhealthy diets,<\/li><li>Increasing sedentary lifestyles, and<\/li><li>Use of tobacco and alcohol.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Malaysia has one of the highest rates of diabetes in the Asia-Pacific, with almost one-fifth of its population diagnosed with the disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other most found health complications in the Malaysian population include<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Obesity<\/li><li>Hypertension and heart diseases<\/li><li>Stoke<\/li><li>Respiratory disease<\/li><li>Cancer<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Definition of generic drug in Malaysia<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A generic product is a pharmaceutical product similar to a currently registered product in Malaysia. The NPRA is an organization under the <strong>Pharmaceutical Services Division (PSD)<\/strong> of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.moh.gov.my\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ministry of Health (MoH)<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npra.gov.my\/index.php\/en\/about\/drug-control-authority-dca\/about-the-dca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Drug Control Authority (DCA)<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0is the executive branch of the\u00a0<strong>NPRA<\/strong>\u00a0and is responsible for drug registration, licensing for importers, and manufacturers, and drug quality monitoring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are various types of generic drug application evaluation processes?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Generic pharmaceutical products<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table is-style-regular\"><table class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#e7f5fe\"><tbody><tr><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\"><strong>S. This category is exempted from certain information in Part I ACTD and Process Validation Report. This guideline is adopted from the Guideline on the Investigation of Bioequivalence\u201d (European Medicines Agency, London, 20 January 2010, CPMP\/EWP\/QWP\/1401\/98 Rev 1) with some adaptation for ASEAN application.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Some categories of products require Bioavailability (BA) studies. For example, modified-release products.<\/li><li>Bioequivalence Studies are required for the drug products falling under the category of scheduled poison generics.<\/li><li>There are some exemptions for submitting BA\/BE studies, provided by fulfilling the criteria set by the regulators.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Manufacturing site requirements for generic drug registration<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Compliance with&nbsp;<strong>Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP)<\/strong>&nbsp;is a prerequisite to the application of generic product registration.&nbsp;<\/li><li>It is to ensure that the products manufactured are safe, have efficacy, and are of quality.<\/li><li><strong>Pharmaceutical Inspection Co-operation Scheme (PIC\/S)<\/strong>&nbsp;Guide to Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) for medicinal products and its annexes have been adopted as the standard used by NPCB to assess the GMP conformity of manufacturers.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Requirements for foreign manufacturers to register the generic drug in Malaysia<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Manufacturers need to comply with the standards of manufacture and quality control for medicinal products manufactured outside Malaysia before they register with the authority namely Drug Control Authority (DCA).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the requirements to register an imported medicinal product in Malaysia is the submission of acceptable evidence on the GMP compliance of the manufacturer in a prescribed format.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The drug registration process in Malaysia<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The company must register with the <strong>Malaysian Registrar of Business (ROB)<\/strong> or the Companies Commission of Malaysia (SSM).<\/li><li>Applicants need to submit drug applications through a web system to the DCA.<\/li><li>The applicant must submit the required documents to support an application for product registration following ACTD guidelines.<\/li><li>The evaluation committee with NPCB will evaluate the application and may<ul><li>Accept<\/li><li>Reject<\/li><li>Order for Re-assessment<\/li><\/ul><\/li><li>Upon approval during screening, the applicant is requested to proceed with payment and submission of hard copy documents.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"607\" height=\"468\" src=\"https:\/\/credevo.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Generic_drug_approval_process_Malaysia_report_Credevo.png\" alt=\"Generic drug registration process in Malaysia\" class=\"wp-image-5515\" srcset=\"https:\/\/credevo.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Generic_drug_approval_process_Malaysia_report_Credevo.png 607w, https:\/\/credevo.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Generic_drug_approval_process_Malaysia_report_Credevo-300x231.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 607px) 100vw, 607px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator is-style-wide\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Review fees for generic applications<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The fee for review of the various generic drug products is approximately between RM 2,200.00 to RM 3,000.00.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Timelines for generic applications review<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The timeline for drug approval is<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>The standard route has a target&nbsp;time&nbsp;of 365 days,<\/li><li>The abbreviated route has a target&nbsp;timeline&nbsp;of 180 days, and <\/li><li>The verification route has a target of 135 days.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Post-approval distribution process <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Any company that wishes to manufacture, import, and\/or wholesale any registered product should have a Manufacturer\u2019s Licence, Import Licence, and\/or Wholesaler\u2019s License.<\/li><li>The company or sponsor needs to submit an application form with supporting documents.
