It is a common, clinically heterogenous, immune-mediated, non-scarring hair loss disorder. It occurs when your immune system mistakenly attacks hair follicles, which is where hair growth begins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alopecia areata is known as a \u201cpolygenic disease.\u201d This means that, unlike a single-gene disease, both parents must contribute a number of specific genes in order for a child to develop it.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are Alopecia symptoms?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some of the common symptoms of Alopecia Areata are as follows<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Small, round (or oval) patches of hair loss on the scalp, beard area of the face, or other areas of the body with hair<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hair loss and regrowth at the same time in different areas of the body<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Significant hair loss in a very short period of time<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hair loss that\u2019s mostly on one side of the scalp, instead of both sides<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cExclamation point\u201d hairs that are narrow at the base\/next to the scalp<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cStippling\u201d or \u201cPitting\u201d (rows of tiny dents) on the fingernails <\/span><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is the prevalence of Alopecia?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alopecia Areata affects as many as 6.8 million people in the U.S. with 147 million people worldwide. It often first appears during childhood and can be different for everyone who has it, and there is no way to predict the pattern of hair loss and regrowth that will be experienced or how severe or long-lasting<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it will be.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Canada, the annual years of healthy life lost per 100,000 people from Alopecia Areata has increased by 10.7% since 1990, an average of 0.5% a year.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are available treatments of Alopecia?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Treatment of alopecia areata is dependent on the age of the patient as well as the extent and duration of scalp involvement. Treatments include steroids, topical immunotherapy, topical minoxidil, anthralin, and immunosuppressants. Each case must be dealt with on a customized individual basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was reported in 2013-14&nbsp;that there was no FDA (Food and Drug Administration)-approved treatments for alopecia areata (AA). However, the following kinds of therapies are utilized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Localized Therapy For Alopecia<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Intralesional corticosteroids<\/li><li>Topical corticosteroids<\/li><li>Minoxidil<\/li><li>Anthralin<\/li><li>Topical immunotherapy<\/li><li>Phototherapy<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Systemic Therapy For Alopecia<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Corticosteroids<\/li><li>Cyclosporine<\/li><li>Methotrexate<\/li><li>Psychosocial support<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Clinical Trials in Alopecia?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Alopecia has been a widely studied indication. There&nbsp;are consistent efforts ongoing to find an effective treatment for this disorder. A <a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/ct2\/results?cond=Alopecia\">search on clinicaltrials.gov<\/a> reveals a total of 207 studies worldwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"801\" height=\"445\" src=\"https:\/\/credevo.com\/articles\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/alopecia_clinical_trials_worldwide_credevo.png\" alt=\"alopecia_clinical_trials_worldwide_credevo\" class=\"wp-image-335\" srcset=\"https:\/\/credevo.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/alopecia_clinical_trials_worldwide_credevo.png 801w, https:\/\/credevo.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/alopecia_clinical_trials_worldwide_credevo-300x167.png 300w, https:\/\/credevo.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/alopecia_clinical_trials_worldwide_credevo-768x427.png 768w, https:\/\/credevo.com\/articles\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/alopecia_clinical_trials_worldwide_credevo-732x407.png 732w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 801px) 100vw, 801px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>While most of the trials were centered in North America, Canada got a small number of trials in alopecia, as <a href=\"https:\/\/clinicaltrials.gov\/ct2\/results\/map\/click?map.x=211&amp;map.y=166&amp;cond=Alopecia&amp;mapw=1345\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported in clinicaltrials.gov<\/a>.
