The lack of awareness about these conditions makes it much harder for them to get the right treatment. Rare Disease Day<\/strong> is all about raising awareness for rare diseases. The first Rare Disease Day was founded in 2008 on February 29th, since then, the day has grown to incorporate numerous health organizations and regulatory agencies across the world, including events in 94 countries last year. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is a rare disease?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A rare<\/strong> disease which is also referred to as an orphan disease is any disorder that affects a small percentage of the population. Every country has its own definition based on the population it affects. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

United States<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

In the United States, a rare disease is defined as a condition that affects fewer than 200,000 people. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Europe<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

A disease or disorder is defined as rare in Europe when it affects less than 1 in 2000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Japan<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

In Japan, a rare disease is one that affects fewer than 50,000 patients Japan, or about 1 in 2,500 people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Australia<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Australia Therapeutic Goods Authority – TGA<\/strong>, describes rare diseases are a condition, syndrome, or disorder that affects 1 in 10,000 people or less.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Russia<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

In Russia, a disease is considered to be orphan if there are not more than 10 cases per 100 000 population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The main objective of Rare Disease Day is to raise awareness amongst the general public and decision-makers about rare diseases and their impact on patients’ lives. European Organisation for Rare Diseases was established this day in 2008 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rare Disease Day takes place on the last day of February each year. 29 February 2020<\/strong> will be the thirteenth international Rare Disease Day<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
